9 Things We All Miss in Boracay

Gone are the days when a trip to the world famed island, Boracay, is as easy as clicking a Piso Fare promo ad. After the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the area in 2018, when some activities were restricted and permanently stopped, and now during this COVID-19 pandemic, when health protocols are being implemented, I must say that a lot has changed in the way we experience Boracay. But , I guess, it is safe to say that these changes are needed to achieve a sustainable tourism and to preserve the beauty of Boracay we are all blessed.

Perhaps, I can consider myself lucky, 'coz I was able to witness and experience Boracay before and after these lifechanging events. So maybe it will be good to lay down the 9 things we miss about Boracay:

1. White Beach: First on the list, Boracay's white sand beach. Who would not want to feel those fine sand touching your toes while you're having a peaceful and quiet morning walk. Definitely, this 4km stretch of white sand beach is the top reason why tourists keep on coming back in this island.

It was in 2012 when I first set foot on the powdery white sand of Boracay, I must say that more than giving the best backdrop for your selfies, the sand will also give you a therapeutic feel when you walk or lie on it.

I just recently visited the island and happy that we can still enjoy the beach without my face shield and facemask clung on my face. But just a reminder to be mindful of disposing these paraphernalia. Like in any garbage, please practice responsible disposal and don't leave it by the beach.

2.Sand Castles: Once upon a time, tourists used to marvel their eyes with intricately made sand castle sculptures, towering along the long stretch of Boracay's white beach. However, it was regulated since building such would require a hefty amount of sand thus affecting the natural terrain of the beach.

Though, this attraction now is already restricted, tourists can still enjoy making their own sand castles.

3.Temporary Tattoos: If you're one of those who can't commit to a permanent tattoo, then you can experience getting inked with temporary henna tattoos. I think everyone will agree that Boracay is also home to talented artisans.

4.Beach Braids: To complete your beach look, you can pay a minimal fee to the locals to style your hair with colorful ribbons and tight braids.

5. Calamansi Muffins:
Because of it's fame, I remember that Cebu Pacific included this pastry in their onboard menu a few years ago. So I really got curious when I went back to Boracay.

I have to admit that I visited Real Coffee to have my much needed caffeine break but since I was there, I also took the chance to have a bite of their famous calamansi muffins. I am not a fan of sour sweet breads or pastries, but I must say that this one is an exception. It has a balance taste of sourness and sweetness.

So on your next visit in Boracay don't forget to have a taste of this local brand.

6.Island Hopping: Aklan is truly blessed with such wonders of nature. Every guest can explore Boracay's neighboring islands. Who would not miss Puka beach?

7. Water Sports: Whether your with your besties, family members, or your significant other, Boracay has a line-up of activities to make your stay even more exciting. Who would not want a selfie underneath the waters of Boracay. Or experience the thrill of parasailing up above the skies. Definitely, Boracay has a lot to offer for every type of tourist.

8. Sunset: What better way to end your fun filled day but just to relax and be in awe with the sun and the seas kissing the day goodbye.

9. Night Life: Here's another entertaining scene for tourists back in the day. Besides loud happy music echoing all over the island, tourists also feasts their eyes with fire dancers roaming around the beaches of Boracay. As delightful as it may seem, the dance trick is harmful for the pristine white sands as it leaves black residue. With this the local government of Boracay passed an ordinance in 2014 regulating this night attraction.

I remember writing an article about the residue left by bonfires. Check it here: 3 Things you can do on your Next Camping Trip

As they say it, it is too dangerous playing with fire so kudos for the local government of Boracay for this initiative.

No doubt, Boracay deserves to be a world class tourist attraction. I hope that efforts toward its conservation will be sustainable for the years to come. As Boracay is something we can all be proud of.
